Artist/Creator Interview
Q1. Tell us about yourself as an artist/creator.
Hi, I’m Janet from Chiang Mai, Thailand. I graduated with a bachelor of photographic arts.
But I have liked to draw since I was young.
I started to create my own characters when I was in university and tried to make my own merchandise.
Then I found that the duck should be my own character because Thai people use DUCK as a metaphor for people who can do many things but not really good at anything and I’m kind of that duck person.
Q2. What inspired your cover design for Mossery?
First think of this design, I think about the people who are going to use this book.
It will be a part of their daily life so I am thinking about something that happens usually every day.
I like to create illustrations that play with the context around. When I saw the template of Mossery cover, it reminded me of elements in the sky train such as handrail loop and pole.
The sky train scenario must be familiar to many people who use public transportation either students or working age. So I decided to create this scene that can relate with many users to make it feel like they use this notebook to note their journey.
Q3. Describe your artistic style and influences.
There’re many artistic styles that interested and inspired me such as Fauvism, Naive art, Memphis art, Abstract art.
Mostly, I create my illustrations with digital paint but I also like to try new things such as acrylic on canvas, sewing, sculptor, etc. My favorite artist for now is Henri Matisse.
Q4. What was your creative process for this design?
After I get an idea, I try to search for the various sky train atmospheres and sketch it.
Then I sketch the characters that would play with the element on the cover and move it around to make the composition look good. After I am done with the sketch, I start doing the illustration with Ai and set the color scheme. I want this illustration to look lively so I use bright colors. And that’s it.
Q5. Did you face any challenges during the creation? How did you overcome them?
It always happens when starting a new project.
It’s “I have no idea” or sometimes an idea comes up but the picture does not communicate as well as I imagined.
My solution is to take a break, just don’t think about it for a while, doing other things such as watching movies, doing exercise, finding some good foods to eat (haha) then get back to work again.
Q6. Are there specific themes or messages you wanted to convey through the cover?
What I want to convey is “The journey alongside the owner”.
As I mentioned above, I want to design something related to people’s daily life to make them feel this’s a part of their life journey.
Q7. What is creativity mean to you?
As I mentioned before, I am kind of a duck person that can do many many things but I don’t know what I’m good at. But creativity is one part that I am proud to present in my work. Creativity is another world to travel.
Everyone has their own creativity and it always brings new things.
Q8. What emotions do you hope people feel when they see your cover?
Mostly, my work often makes people giggle and I’m really happy about that.
I still hope people be enjoy and be loving with my character and the scene I create.
Q9. What advice do you have for aspiring artists or creators who want to make their mark in the industry?
I can only say.. JUST START. Even if you don’t know what you are good at.
Even if you don’t know what you are going to create. If you want to do, just try it and someday you will find your own way.
