Behind The Cover

Artist/Creator Interview

Q1. Tell us about yourself as an artist/creator.

Hello, I’m Nelly. Ever since I was a child, I’ve had a passion for using colorful pens to draw on various surfaces,
including the walls at home, my mom’s books, and even my little brother’s face – they all used to be my canvases (laughs).
As I continued my education, I decided to focus on commercial design, both in vocational school and university.
For more than a decade now, my career has revolved around design, and it can be mentally demanding.
Therefore, during my spare time outside of work, I find solace in drawing.
It serves as a form of
self-healing and a way to relieve stress.

Q2. What inspired your cover design for Mossery?

We often find ourselves caught up in the hustle and bustle of life, and in doing so,
we ignore our inner feelings, thoughts, and creativity.
As we grow older,we gradually become numb to life, or perhaps it’s really numbness towards ourselves.
This artwork depicts a nighttime scene, symbolizing our inner selves.
All our feelings, thoughts, and creativity are like butterflies fluttering within us.
Each butterfly has its own uniqueness and irreplaceability.
Letting go of the attachment to defining things as good or bad,
what we need to do is be as pure and sincere as a cat, accompanying those butterflies in their flight or in their stillness,
and savoring the time spent with ourselves.

Q3. Describe your artistic style and influences.

My creations are more like spontaneous doodles and hand-drawn sketches, and they don’t belong to any particular style.
Currently, most of my works are filled with cute and playful elements. I love animals, especially cats.
That’s why most of the time I put my pet cats in my art works.

Q4. What was your creative process for this design?

In a conversation with my husband, he mentioned that as he’s getting older,
after facing the busyness and realities of life for an extended period,
he finds it increasingly challenging to distinguish his thoughts, emotions,
and even notices a decline in his creativity compared to when he was younger.
We have numerous potted flowers and plants outside our home, and every now and then,
butterflies and bees flutter around them.
My husband enjoys sitting by the doorway, watching those butterflies and bees. This inspired me tocreate this artwork.

Q5. Did you face any challenges during the creation? How did you overcome them?

Creation is the time when I allow my thoughts and body to wander freely, devoid of any sense of pressure.
It’s a state of comfort, of naturalness.
To me, everything revolves around embracing the natural progression and discovering joy within it.
As a result, the so-called difficulties or challenges don’t seem to really exist.

Q6. Are there specific themes or messages you wanted to convey through the cover?

Life has many difficulties. As we keep working hard, remember to give yourself some space and time to be alone.
Sometimes, when we think about our feelings and thoughts, we can understand life better and feel a calm moment in the midst of everything.

Q7. What is creativity mean to you?

Creativity happens when we feel calm and simple inside, and then we look at things in a different way to understand our thoughts.
It’s like a special kind of humor in our lives and it’s what makes our creations feel meaningful and alive.

Q8. What emotions do you hope people feel when they see your cover?

Peace and joy.

Q9. What advice do you have for aspiring artists or creators who want to make their mark in the industry?

Creativity happens when we feel calm and simple inside, and then we look at things in a different way to understand our thoughts.
